Three tips for having a good working relationship with your divorce lawyer

When you pay for any professional service, including that of a divorce lawyer, you want to be thoughtful about how you interact and utilise your time with them.  It is important that you have confidence that you are being listened to and represented.

You need to know that your divorce lawyer understands what you want to achieve and the level of service that you require.

Here are some tips on how you can get the best out of your divorce lawyer during a divorce case. Here are some things you can do:

  1. Be honest and clear with your lawyer: It’s essential to be upfront with your lawyer as they can only help you if they have the complete information. Be honest in your communications with your lawyer, and provide them with all the necessary details regarding your case.
  2. Respond to your lawyer promptly: Divorce cases often involve time-sensitive legal issues that require immediate attention. Respond to your lawyer’s enquiries and requests as soon as possible to help them build the strongest case possible and avoid them having to follow up with you for instructions as this can increase your legal costs.   Provide your lawyer with all the documents and evidence that are related to your case. This includes financial statements, bank statements, tax returns, and other legal documents.
  3. Understand the legal process: Familiarise yourself with the legal process involved in divorce, including court procedures, deadlines, and filing requirements. Read the documentation your lawyer sends you in full. This will help you and your lawyer to stay on top of the case. Your lawyer should be able to provide you with advice and guidance throughout the divorce process, so make sure to listen carefully to their advice and ask questions if something isn’t clear

With a good relationship between you and your lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your interests are being represented and that you will have a positive outcome from the divorce.
