Donna’s story: Finding a firm that was committed to helping you follow your ambitions no matter your route to law

When I joined The Family Law Company (or Hartnell Chanot & Partners as it was known then) I knew I had made the right decision.

I had previously been gaining experience at another firm and knew that I wished to pursue in Family Law. To me it seemed to make sense to join what was then the only law firm of family law specialists in the area.

Commitment to their clients and their colleagues

Their commitment to their clients was like nothing I had ever experienced at a law firm previously and their commitment to training and growing their team within were second to none.

Often qualifying through a non-conventional route such as home learning or open university can mean that some employers do not recognise your qualifications in the same way that they may a law degree. As soon as I joined The Family Law Company they couldn’t have been more committed to assist me with my studies. Not only did they provide additional funding but they provided me with time to study.

I always felt completely valued as an employee studying through CILEX. I know many of my colleagues whom I have met alongside my studies did not feel that way in their roles so I was always very grateful.

Clear career progression for all employees

I qualified as a CILEX lawyer in 2008 after a number of years studying and working full time. I then progressed my way through the company as an Associate Lawyer, Senior Associate Lawyer and am now a Director and Owner of the business after having bought in to the company in 2015.

To be given the opportunity to be at one of the most senior positions in the company at aged 35 was a huge honour for me and showed the commitment that The Family Law Company had towards training its staff.

A strong culture of paying it forward

You never stop learning and throughout my time here I progressed with other team members and have now set up a mentoring scheme to help those who wish to follow my path.  It didn’t stop there the mentoring scheme has grown and colleagues across skill sets are sharing their knowledge with each other.  Whether it’s helping build confidence, teaching social media or leadership skills there are lots of opportunities to learn from each other as well as externally.

A lot of companies say the sky is the limit when you join them in terms of career development but I know that The Family Law Company are truly committed to developing their team.
