Being a trainee solicitor with a firm that specialises in family law offers a unique and focused approach to the start of my life as a solicitor.

I have always wanted to specialise in family law but I never thought that I would be fortunate enough to train with a firm which only undertakes work in this area and has specialist lawyers who are leaders in their field.

I started working for The Family Law Company in July 2015 as a paralegal and used this opportunity to build my practical knowledge of family law and legal aid. I was then offered a training contract and began this in July 2018. In order to complete a training contract, a trainee solicitor traditionally does three to four ‘seats’, to experience different areas of law. I feel lucky that I have been able to focus on family law and be in a position to use my training seats to explore different areas of specialisms within this field.

I also undertook a secondment with a fantastic firm in Plymouth, where I trained in residential and commercial property. This was a brilliant experience; the knowledge I gained compliments my other training and I have used this regularly alongside any divorce and finance work.

Since returning from secondment, I have trained in:

In addition to the formal training contract, The Family Law Company is also very supportive of my personal development and networking. I am the diversity officer on the Devon and Somerset Junior Lawyer Division (JLD) Committee. I am also on the DASLS International Sub-Committee and have represented DASLS at The Federation of European Bars conference in Bologna.

I am a member of Resolution, which is a network of family lawyers who are committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes. In support of this, I also sit on the YRes Devon Committee and I am a member of the National Committee of YRes, which means that I go to London regularly and meet with other National Committee members from across the country.

I feel incredibly privileged to be undertaking my training with The Family Law Company and I am excited to embark on the next stage of my career in January 2020, when I qualify as a solicitor.
