Each month we are featuring one of our solicitors or chartered executives. We feel strongly that our clients should be matched with the right lawyer, so this is one way of finding out a little more about our team.

Our lawyer of the month for November is Jill Read-Brown. Jill is based at our Exeter office.

Q&A – Ten Questions

  1. What is your job title?

Senior Associate

  1. How long have you been at The Family Law Company?

15 years

  1. How did you come to be at TFLC?

I was working for Stones and my mother had just passed away.  I was approached by Jane Chanot who was on the other side of some of the cases I was working on.  She was extremely kind and understanding and asked me to join Hartnell Chanot where I would get a different level of support at such times.  I have never looked back.

  1. What inspired you to go into family law?

I was doing paralegal work and one of the partners left the firm I was working for, so I took on some of her caseload and I did my Cilex training and have been practising family law ever since.

  1. Describe your specialism/s

Working with victims of domestic abuse and doing private law children work.  I also enjoy financial work as it brings a balance.  DV and children work can be emotionally draining.

  1. What would you say are your key strengths as a family lawyer?

Providing practical and emotional support to clients in crisis.  I am straightforward and a fairly strong advocate.

  1. What is the achievement you are most proud of in your job?

Law Society Excellence Award in 2008.

  1. Why do you think TFLC is different from other family lawyers?

We are specialists in the field and therefore stand out in terms of the service we can offer clients.  We also do not differentiate between legal aid, reduced fee and full private paying clients who all get the same level of service.

  1. Are there any related volunteering roles you undertake?

Not any more, I used to be a trustee for Relate but time is an issue.

  1. What do you do to relax?

Primarily I enjoy spending time with my family but practice yoga and I am a keen gardener.
