Deaf Awareness Week takes place this year between 15th – 21st May. The UK Council of Deafness has themed this year’s campaign as “A Celebration”.
The campaign will be launched for the 11th year with the goal of the event to highlight the impact and needs of those who suffer with hearing loss, and to raise funds to support those in need.
How many people are affected?
- One in six people are affected by hearing loss
- 5 million of these are aged 60 or over
- 7 million are of working age
- Around 2 million people in the UK have hearing aids
- About 800,000 are severely or profoundly deaf
Several events will take place during the week across the country and, as with previous years, will inevitably serve as an excellent example of how awareness can be raised when organisations come together. The National Society for Deaf Children are holding a ‘Big Cake Bake’ to raise money for Deaf Awareness Week and awareness to help deaf children.
