The 1st to the 7th December is Crohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week. Donna Hart, Director of Legal Services and divorce specialist, talks about what it is like living with Crohn’s Disease.

“I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease 4 years ago. Fortunately, I have been able to keep working. I know that there are many sufferers who have had to leave their jobs because they are no longer able to work. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by supportive colleagues who are all aware of my condition and help to support me during difficult times. It has also helped me to be mindful of others who may suffer with long term health conditions. It has prompted us to start up a well-being group and we now offer staff benefits to employees so that they can enjoy complimentary therapies. I take full advantage of this scheme and often undergo reflexology and other helpful treatments. I also ensure that I get plenty of rest at weekends. People wouldn’t know I was ill but I am very open about it and it has taught me that you never know what someone else may be going through – often people with chronic conditions put on a brave face and if people don’t understand what the disease is they may not appreciate what you are going through – my advice to others suffering is to never try and justify how you are feeling to others – if you feel tired and want a nap, do it, don’t feel guilty – look after yourself and listen to your body”.
