When your parents break up you can feel like you are the only person in the world this is happening to. Look around at your friends. There are probably quite a few of them this has happened to. You might worry that they will find your family break up embarrassing or think you are behaving a little strangely.

At first I kept it to myself about my parent’s splitting up. I just wanted to make it all go away. Then one night I went to a sleepover at my best friend’s house and she asked me if I was okay. After we talked about it I felt so much better and I know she can keep a secret.” ( Becky, 12)

It can be a real shock when you first find out your mum and dad are splitting up and you might want to let it sink in before talking to your friends. Everyone is different though and you may want to talk to a friend straight away.

Choose people you can trust

Either way, choose really close friends to talk to – people you feel you can trust. You are likely to be feeling quite sad and confused and need to be with people who care about your feelings.

Try telling friends one at a time and when you are on your own. Only tell them as much as you feel you want to. Remember, bottling up feelings never helps and you might feel a lot better when you share you problems with someone else.
